📝 UPSC Exam Pattern Overview:
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted in three stages: Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Prelims is objective-type, Mains is descriptive, and the Interview tests personality traits. The entire cycle lasts about a year.
1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
Nature: Objective-type (Multiple Choice Questions).
Papers:
General Studies Paper I – Tests knowledge of current events, history, geography, polity, economy, environment, and general science.
CSAT (General Studies Paper II) – Tests comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, and basic numeracy.
Duration: 2 hours each.
Marks: Each paper carries 200 marks.
Qualifying: CSAT is qualifying (minimum 33% required). GS Paper I marks decide selection for Mains.
2. Main Examination (Mains)
Nature: Descriptive (Essay-type answers).
Papers (9 in total):
Qualifying Papers:
Paper A: Indian Language (300 marks).
Paper B: English (300 marks).
Counted Papers:
Essay (250 marks).
General Studies I–IV (250 marks each).
Two Optional Subject Papers (250 marks each).
Total Marks: 1750 (excluding qualifying papers).
Focus: Analytical ability, critical thinking, and depth of knowledge.
3. Personality Test (Interview)
Marks: 275.
Nature: Face-to-face interview with UPSC board.
Focus: Candidate’s personality, communication skills, leadership, integrity, and suitability for civil services.
⚠️ Key Considerations
Prelims is only qualifying for Mains; marks don’t count in final merit.
Mains + Interview = 2025 marks (final merit ranking).
Preparation strategy must differ: Prelims needs breadth, Mains needs depth, Interview needs confidence and clarity.
Cycle duration: Nearly 1 year from Prelims to final results
