The Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination to recruit candidates for various administrative posts in the state. The exam follows a three‑stage selection process: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview.
1️⃣ Preliminary Examination
Type: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
Papers:
General Studies Paper I – 200 marks
General Studies Paper II – 200 marks
Duration: 2 hours each
Total Marks: 400
Key Point: Prelims is only a qualifying stage. Marks are not counted in the final merit list.
2️⃣ Main Examination:
Type: Descriptive (Written)
Papers: Six compulsory papers
Paper I – Hindi & English Language (150 marks)
Paper II – Language & Literature (150 marks)
Paper III – Social Sciences: History & Geography (200 marks)
Paper IV – Indian Constitution, Polity & Public Administration (200 marks)
Paper V – Indian Economy, Globalization & Sustainable Development (200 marks)
Paper VI – General Sciences, Environment & Technology (200 marks)
Total Marks: 1050
3️⃣ Interview / Personality Test:
Marks: 100
Purpose: To assess personality, communication skills, and suitability for administrative responsibilities.

Prelims is qualifying; only Mains + Interview marks decide the final merit.
Mains carries the maximum weightage, demanding strong writing and analytical skills.
Interview, though only 100 marks, can be decisive in close competition.
No negative marking in Prelims, allowing candidates to attempt more questions confidently
